The idea

An old Indian habit, made easy to keep.

Shathpavali · shath = hundred, pavali = steps

Many Indian families have long followed a simple rule: after a meal, don't sit down straight away. Get up and walk a hundred steps.

Modern research agrees that moving soon after eating helps the body use the sugar from that meal. Shathpavali turns the habit into a daily routine, with a gentle reminder after each meal and a record of how you're doing.

The science

Why walk after meals?

After you eat, blood sugar rises. Working muscles take up sugar from the blood, so a walk soon after a meal can soften that rise.

12%

In adults with type 2 diabetes, a 10-minute walk after each meal lowered after-meal blood sugar by about 12% compared with one 30-minute walk at any time of day. The biggest benefit came after dinner.

Reynolds AN et al. Diabetologia, 2016. Randomised crossover study, 41 adults.

Sooner

A review of eight trials found that exercise after eating reduced blood sugar spikes, while exercise before eating did not. Starting soon after the meal worked better than waiting.

Shathpavali supports the care you get from your doctor. It does not replace medicine or medical advice. If you have heart disease or other conditions, ask your doctor what level of walking is right for you.

Questions

Frequently asked

Who is Shathpavali for?

It's made for people with diabetes or prediabetes in India, and for anyone who wants to build the habit of walking after meals.

Which phones does it work on?

Shathpavali is for iPhone. You can join the beta through TestFlight now, and it will be on the App Store soon.

Do I need a glucometer?

No. You can log readings from a home glucometer or from your lab reports. Step tracking and walk reminders work without any readings.

Do I really need only 100 steps?

One hundred steps is the traditional starting point and an easy habit to begin with. The studies above used walks of about 10 minutes after meals, so walk longer when you can.

How do family groups work?

One person creates a group and shares its 4-digit code. Others in the family enter the code to join.

Can this replace my diabetes medicine?

No. Keep taking your medicines as prescribed and follow your doctor's advice. Shathpavali is a support tool for daily habits.
